Here's The Truth: The Right Job Can Change Your Life

Over the 25+ years I’ve been working in executive search, I’ve helped hundreds of people land the right role, and I don’t use the word right lightly. I’m talking about game-changing roles - the kind that challenge you, accelerate your growth, and open the door to financial freedom, better work/life balance, and meaningful impact.

I’ve also seen what happens when smart, capable leaders stay too long in the wrong role. The toll is real - energy drops and confidence erodes. They start to feel like a dimmed-down version of themselves.

Yes, I own an executive search firm but the work I do isn’t just about filling roles. I act as an honest broker. If I don’t think the opportunity on the table is the right fit for you - your values, your capabilities, your goals, your lifestyle - I’ll say so. Because I’ve seen what’s possible when the right fit clicks into place and I want that for all my clients.

The right role can create generational wealth

Let’s start with something tangible: money.

The right role at the right time can catapult someone’s earning potential in a way that changes not just their life, but also their family’s lives. I’ve helped leaders land positions with equity, performance-based bonuses, and long-term incentive plans that have allowed them to:

  • Pay for their kids (and even grandkids) to attend college debt-free

  • Provide exceptional care for aging parents

  • Purchase their dream home—or a second home by the water

  • Take bucket-list trips they never thought possible

  • Build generational wealth that sets up their family for decades

When people ask me why I care so much about fit, this is part of the reason. A transformative role isn't just a title change—it’s a financial turning point.

And research backs this up: A Pew Research Center study (2022) found that top reasons people leave roles include low pay, lack of advancement, and feeling disrespected - clear signs that alignment and opportunity matter more than compensation alone.

A better fit brings more energy, greater confidence and renewed joy

You can tell almost immediately when someone’s in the right role. Their energy is different. They’re more confident, more decisive, and more present. They stop “shoulding” their way through the day and start showing up fully.

(I wrote about this in my post How to Bring More “Want To” and Less “Should” to Your Workday. That shift—from doing what drains you to doing what energizes you—is a powerful one.)

A common misconception I hear all the time? That if you want to be in a high-powered, high-impact role, you have to sacrifice all sense of work/life balance.

It’s simply not true.

I’ve placed people in C-level roles that come with high-performing teams, greater work / life balance, and cultures that actually promote career satisfaction. When the organization values you, they don’t want to burn you out.

Gallup’s 2023 State of the Global Workplace report found that only 23% of employees are engaged at work globally. One of the top drivers of engagement? Whether you feel your strengths are being used and valued. When you’re in a role that taps into your gifts and honors your time, you do better work and you feel better doing it.

The right job will challenge you and help you grow

I’ll be honest: the roles I help my clients land aren’t always easy. They’re often stretch roles—the kind that ask more of you, push you to lead in new ways, and demand a sharper, more strategic version of yourself.

But the right kind of challenge is invigorating. It wakes you up. It helps you grow faster than you ever thought possible.

This is where my background as a coach really matters. I don’t just help you land the job—I help you rise to it. I coach candidates through the early months of a new role, helping them build presence, clarify priorities, and communicate effectively with new stakeholders.

According to Harvard Business Review, employees who use their strengths daily are significantly more productive and experience higher levels of well-being. I’ve seen this play out over and over again with my clients.

The best roles stretch you—but they also support you as you grow.

The right role gives you the platform to make an impact

More and more, I’m seeing leaders come to me not just because they want a bigger job but because they want to do more meaningful work. They want to leave a mark. Change an industry. Advance a cause. Lead with their values.

If that’s you, I want you to know: it’s possible.

I’ve helped executives land roles where they’ve transformed stagnant teams into thriving cultures. Where they’ve championed diversity, equity, and inclusion in industries that desperately needed it (even though this is no longer in vogue!) Where they’ve introduced innovation that made lives better—whether in consumer products, healthcare, or education.

When you’re in a role that aligns with your personal mission, you don’t just show up more fully and passionately—you bring out the best in everyone around you.

This isn’t just a placement, it’s a turning point

We do executive searches differently. We move fast—delivering placements typically within 1–2 months. We’re not constrained by “off-limits” agreements, so we can recruit top talent from companies others won’t touch. And our hires stick—many of our placements stay in their roles for 10 to 15 years and go on to lead game-changing initiatives.

But what really sets us apart is our commitment to fit. I’d rather lose a candidate than place someone in a role that isn’t right for them. Because I’ve seen what happens when people land in the right role:

They grow.
They thrive.
They become more confident, energized, and fulfilled.

And the ripple effect is enormous—on their teams, their families, and their future.
